Tackling drugs on an all Ireland basis

25 March, 2004

Sinn Féin Representative for Dublin South East, Daithí Doolan, speaking ahead of a drugs conference hosted by the South Inner City Drugs Task Force, emphasised that, "It is imperative that we tackle both the causes and consequences of drug addiction on an all Ireland basis. This is the message I will be bringing to this important conference."

Mr. Doolan said: "Today's conference is entitled "Building Confidence", this confidence needs to be built on our shared experiences. Dublin has been to the fore in tackling the scourge of drugs for over 20 years. There is a wealth of experience in our communities. This experience needs to be shared with communities in Belfast and Derry that are currently coming to terms with a growing drugs problem. Today's conference will give a unique opportunity to do that."

Addressing the situation in Dublin Mr. Doolan said, "There is a worrying increase in cocaine use here in Dublin. Yet our drug services are not being resourced to tackle this new development. During the 1980's we were told there was no drug problem in Dublin, now there seems to be a repeat of this behaviour by the government. Deny there is a cocaine problem and it just might go away. Well I have a message for the government, the drug problem most definitely has not gone away and now we must tackle a growing cocaine problem. But we can not do it on our own, we need the resources and support from the government to do so."

Mr. Doolan concluded by saying that, "If Minister Noel Ahern is serious about building confidence then he must work with us, resource us and support us in tackling a growing cocaine problem." ENDS

The public meeting takes place today from 9:15-3pm, St Catherine's Sports Centre, D8.
