Public Prosecution Service Pilot no substitute for accountability
Sinn Fein Policing and Justice Spokesperson, North Belfast MLA Gerry Kelly commenting on the launch of the pilot Fermanagh and Tyrone Public Prosecution Service has said that the new regional offices are no substitute for real accountability.
Mr Kelly said:
"While Sinn Fein have very real concerns about the lengthy timetable in rolling out these new regional public prosecution service centres we are certain that this is no substitute for genuine accountability.
"The role of the DPP in politically motivated prosecutions and particularly in concealing evidence from defence solicitors fatally undermines its credibility as an independent service.
"Despite these new regional services there remain fundamental problems about making the Public Prosecution Service accountable for its decision making. No amount of gloss can hide the fact that even within the Justice Bill currently going through Westminster that the issue of accountability has been fudged.
"There can be substitute for a fully independent public prosecution service."ENDS
