Ferris calls for extension of deadline for new fishing regulations

24 September, 2010 - by Martin Ferris TD

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Fisheries Martin Ferris TD has called on the Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey TD to extend the deadline for compliance with new safety regulations for fishing vessels. The regulations are due to come into force on October 1 which would mean that up to 40 whitefish boats could be refused licence renewals as they have been unable to implement the required changes in time.

Deputy Ferris said: “While nobody is disputing the need to enhance the safety of fishing boats, there is a large cost factor involved in making the necessary on board changes. This has meant that a significant number of owners have been unable to meet the deadline given the already difficult financial situation in which they find themselves.

“There is provision under Statutory Instrument 640 (2007) to allow temporary exemptions and I am calling on Minister Dempsey as a matter of urgency to grant these in order to allow the vessels in question sufficient time to make the required changes, and thus avoid facing a situation where they could lose their licences which are up for renewal at the end of this month.” ENDS
