Shameful Greens deny the people an immediate election – Ó Caoláin

22 November, 2010 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Sinn Féin Dáil leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has said that today’s announcement by Green Party Leader John Gormley means that the Greens are to cut and run, while denying the people an immediate General Election.

He said:

“It is absolutely shameful that this party is denying the people an immediate General Election and helping Fianna Fáil to inflict further massive damage on the Irish economy and Irish society.

“Today’s announcement means that the Greens are to cut and run - to help Fianna Fáil to impose savage Budget cuts, to put the State in the hands of the IMF and then run for their political lives.

“The Green Party has played a disgraceful role in one of the worst Cabinets that has ever governed in any country.

“We now have the unprecedented situation where a Coalition partner has announced it is to pull out of a Government while at the same time preparing to help frame and vote for its Budget.

“The General Election in January 2011 will be one of the most important ever held. Sinn Féin will be standing as the only real alternative to the Consensus for Cuts.

“While the Greens will pay electorally for their disgraceful role, Fine Gael and Labour must be challenged also on their support for the Government’s economic strategy which opened the door to the IMF.”
