'Cavan/Monaghan needs Sinn Féin now more than ever' - Kathryn Reilly
Speaking after her selection as the second Sinn Féin candidate for Cavan/Monaghan in the upcoming general election, Cavan activist Kathryn Reilly said that it was a privilege to be selected to run as a second Sinn Féin candidate in the Cavan/Monaghan constituency and that the people there needed Sinn Féin now more than ever.
"It is my priority to translate the vision of the 1916 proclamation on equal rights, equal opportunities and the imperative to treat all the children of the nation equally into a reality for the people of Cavan/Monaghan.
"The priorities on which Fianna Fáil policies are based will not deliver recovery. The Cavan/Monaghan constituency is a case in point: we have 3 sitting Fianna Fáil TDs but there are 13,464 people unemployed.
"Next week’s Budget will see the young, the working poor and the elderly pay for the recklessness and corruption of successive Fianna Fáil governments, the propertied rich and financiers.
"This constituency deserves better.
"There are 192 ghost estates in Cavan and Monaghan, but people are waiting years on council lists to be homed; there are shortages of frontline staff in our hospitals and schools, but there are 2,539 unemployed young people in the constituency.
"Unemployment in this State is at a shocking 13.5%. Nothing has been done by the Fianna Fáil government to address this growing problem. Both Fine Gael and Labour want to add thousands more to that.
"Sinn Féin were the only party to vote against the European Financial Stability Facility. We said no to the IMF. We said no to bailing out powerful European banks at the expense of the Irish people.
"We must reduce the deficit ,but also do more than that. We must build an economy that works for every working person in this country. It is essential not just to serve this constituency, but to ensure that the tyrants in government are not making decisions that will paralyse our economy.
"Today Sinn Féin are leading the way in calling for an economic recovery plan that is based on job creation, taxation justice and an end to wasteful expenditure. We don’t need the IMF. We do not need to bail out the banks at the expense of Irish people- we need to burn the bondholders.
"I am truly privileged to be selected to run as a second Sinn Féin candidate in the Cavan/Monaghan constituency. This constituency and this State needs Sinn Féin now more than ever. " ENDS
