Fine Gael trip to Europe an election stunt – Adams
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has described Fine Gael’s trip to Europe to meet Jóse Manuel Barosso about the EU/IMF deal as an election stunt.
The Sinn Féin Leader, Mr Adams said:
“While the interest on the EU/IMF loan is a serious problem the greatest problem is the loan itself which this state cannot afford.
“Ending the economic crisis is dependant on separating the sovereign debt from the private debt of the banks.
“Mr Kenny would have had a stronger hand if he had not facilitated the passing of the Finance Bill in the Dáil.
“Daniel Gros of the Centre for European Policy Studies said on Morning Ireland today that the critical issue for Ireland was not a reduction of a few percentage points for a few years in terms of the interest due on the EU/IMF ‘Bailout’ but the very real need to tackle the debt being imposed on Ireland though it guarantee of Bank Bondholders debt
“He described this issue as the ‘game changer for Ireland’.
“It is clear to Sinn Féin and to a growing number leading economists that the Irish taxpayer simply cannot afford to shoulder the burden of bank debt.
“Therefore Fine Gael’s trip to Europe is little more than an election stunt.” ENDS
