Welcome for Report on Review in Prisons
Sinn Féin deputy Chair of the Justice Committee Raymond McCartney MLA has this morning welcomed the Report given by Justice Minister David Ford into the Review of Prisons in the north.
Speaking from the Assembly Mr McCartney said;
“Firstly I want to welcome the fact that this review has taken place, its recommendations are long overdue given the severe lack of confidence in the system which has endured for so long.
What must be central to the Minister’s work in the time ahead is implementing the recommendations contained in this review. He must not allow the same old, tired, cynical and negative self interest influences to obstruct the much needed progress yet to be made.
I particularly welcome the focus on the issues around the detention of women and young people, something that has often been overlooked.
This report outlines some steps which need to be taken in order to take the Prison system, out of a culture of ‘security’ and into one which is fit for purpose in the 21st Century.
For our part Sinn Féin will continue to effectively hold the Minister and his department to account in ensuring that these measures are delivered upon.” CRÍOCH
