11 May, 2011 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Speaking ahead of the formation of the of the new Executive, Sinn Fein MEP Bairbre de Brún has called for new ministers and MLAs to put renewable energy and energy efficiency firmly at the heart of all policy within the next Assembly.

Speaking from the European Parliament in Strasbourg , Ms de Brún said,

"Placing renewable energy and energy efficiency at the heart of government will not only ensure our future, but it can also bring employment opportunities, help the construction industry and help tackle fuel poverty.

With our plentiful natural resources, we should be able to set the standard on a global scale. We can and should make use of EU environment funding, covering numerous areas including air, water, waste, climate, soil and agriculture, as well as projects related to forest fire prevention, smart grids, renewable energy and energy efficiency.

"I urge the incoming Executive to ensure that renewable energy, energy efficiency and tackling climate change is central to the programme for government. Not embracing it now will involve a costly game of catch up in the future".
