Families to face greater pain with new stealth taxes – Ó Snodaigh

2 June, 2011 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Sinn Féin TD and spokesperson for the No Water Charges campaign Aengus Ó Snodaigh has hit out at Government proposals to implement two new stealth taxes in the form of water and property charges.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said these charges will cause even more pain to families who are already struggling to cope.

Speaking from Leinster House today Deputy Ó Snodaigh said:

“Despite the grand speeches from the Labour Party and Fine Gael before the elections promising change and fairness, we now know that water charges will be introduced along with a new household charge.

“Hundred of thousands of people are realising this week that they are being hit with yet another financial burden. Many of these people are already struggling to cope with huge cuts to public services, rising costs and unemployment.

“They are also the very same people who are footing the bill for this Government’s decision to pump yet more billions into the failed banking system. They are now being asked to take greater pain in the form of these two new stealth taxes.

“Sinn Féin is fundamentally opposed to the imposition of these charges.

“For our part we will continue to fight against these unjust measures in the Dáil, the Seanad, in council chambers and on the ground.

“We have pinpointed how money could and should be raised through reform of the taxation system, elimination of waste in the public sector and through investing in jobs.

“The measures proposed by Government will achieve nothing only to impoverish yet more hard-pressed people.”
