Mallow Hospital Failed by Government TDs - McLellan
Sinn Féin's TD for Cork East, Sandra McLellan, has criticised local Fine Gael and Labour TDs for failing to support a Sinn Féin motion in the Dáil calling for the retention of a fully-functional Accident and Emergency Department at Mallow General Hospital.
Speaking in the Dáil on Wednesday Deputy McLellan said:
"For too long access to quality health services in Ireland has depended on how much money you earn and where you live. The latter is being further compounded by the Government's retrograde step to totally downgrade emergency services in a number of rural hospitals including Mallow. The reconfiguration of the Emergency Department at Roscommon General Hospital will undoubtedly provide the blueprint for the rest of the country."
"In the Dáil today we presented local TDs with a clear option, support the Sinn Féin motion and support the retention of the current level of services at the A&E at Mallow. Do otherwise and guarantee the opposite. The TDs made their position clear."
"Comprehensive research on this issue carried out at the University of Sheffield in 2007, has shown that every 10km increase in straight-line distance from the nearest A&E was associated with an increased mortality of approximately 1%."
"This strategy makes absolutely no sense given the fact ambulance and GP-out-of-hours services are being slashed as well. All the evidence indicates that these moves will cost lives."
