McLaughlin welcomes Agriculture Minister’s review of Lough Neagh incinerator Proposals.
Mitchel McLaughlin MLA (South Antrim) has welcomed the decision by Agriculture Minister, Michelle O’Neill to request a report on other forms of disposal of chicken waste to be considered rather than incineration.
Mitchel Mc Laughlin said:
“I welcome this decision by the Minister and would suggest that it could precipitate the demise of the current plans by Rose Energy to construct an incinerator on the banks of Lough Neagh – an area of outstanding beauty.
“I congratulate the CALNI group who campaigned to have the incinerator proposals rejected. As this is an issue which has a strong cross Departmental interest between Agriculture and Environment and Minister Michelle O’Neill has ordered a review of all alternatives it is now over to Environment Minister, Alex Attwood to reject these proposals on environmental grounds.“I call on Minister Attwood to refuse to approve the incinerator proposals expeditiously so that everyone is clear on the issue. A quick decision is also needed in order that the still remaining issue of disposal of chicken waste in an environmentally acceptable manner can be addressed."
