Positivity needed from the SDLP - Alex Maskey

6 November, 2011 - by Alex Maskey

Sinn Féin South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey responding to the speech today by new SDLP leader Alasdair McDonnell said:

“It is unfortunate that Alasdair McDonnell appears to be carrying on the fixation of previous SDLP leaders with somehow defeating Sinn Féin. What we had hoped for was a message of positivity but that does not appear to be his agenda.

“Instead of positivity we got negativity. The SDLP’s priotities should be to work with the other parties in the Northern Executive instead of playing silly party politics with talk of smashing this or that which we have all heard before.

“There are big issues facing people in the time ahead and all parties have recently received a fresh manadate to get on with the task of delivering. If the SDLP’s sole preoccupation is with reclaiming lost ground then that is a futile task.

“Despite Alasdair McDonnell’s hostile and negative words, we in Sinn Féin are prepared to work with him to continue to change the North for the betterment of all the people here and throughout the whole island of Ireland.” CRÍOCH/END
