Culture Minister Praises 40 Years of Bunscoil Phobal Feirste.
The Culture Minister has congratulated Bunscoil Phobal Feirste as it celebrates its fortieth birthday.
Speaking as she joined pupils and staff at the school in their celebrations, Carál Ní Chuilín said: “This is a very important year for all of you here at Bunscoil Phobal Feirste and I want to congratulate you on reaching this milestone.
“As this school demonstrates, the Irish language is a vital part of the education system. Over 4,000 children throughout the north attend Irish medium schools and become confident and capable bi-lingual students who have much to contribute to society.
The Minister explained the importance of the `Líofa 2015` initiative which she launched in September.
She said: “The cultural value of the Irish language is immense. It is an essential part of the fabric of our society and is part of our shared rich heritage. The Irish language is learnt, spoken and enjoyed by people of all backgrounds and traditions.“Irish is a living language and I am committed to getting more people speaking Irish which is why I launched ‘Líofa 2015'.
Almost 800 people have taken up theLíofa challenge to date which is very encouraging. Minister Ní Chuilín concluded “I also intend bringing forward proposals to enhance and protect our regional minority languages and as part of this I am considering options for an Irish Language Bill."
