Ellis welcomes overdue taxi industry report and calls for robust legislation
Sinn Féin Transport Spokesperson Dessie Ellis TD has welcomed the publishing of the Taxi Industry Review’s report last night saying “this is a good step toward solving many of the problems faced by taxi drivers and their customers.”
Deputy Ellis said:
“This document is not perfect but it must be brought to the Oireachtas Transport Committee as soon as possible. Legislation must also be formulated to ensure that the situation for honest hard working taxi drivers is improved. There must not be a situation where this report is just left to gather dust.
“There are some issues which need to be debated and which I feel are not correct in the document. For example the reinstatement of the nine year rule – this is not the proper way of dealing with standards. If a car is able to pass a high standard of quality testing on a regular basis the age should not be able to rule it out regardless. The way to ensure quality is regulation and quality control, not arbitrary lines related to age.
“I look forward to working in the Dáil to get the best legislation for taxi reform. My party made a detailed submission to the review and we will seek to have its core policies reflected in any forthcoming law.”
