O’Brien welcomes government announcement of referendum
Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Deputy Jonathan O’Brien TD has today welcomed the announcement by the Government to provide a referendum on the European fiscal Treaty.
The Cork North Central TD said;
“Sinn Féin welcomes this announcement which is yet another failure by this Government. They did their best to attempt to ensure that the people of Ireland would not have their say on this. At least the Tanaiste has acknowledged this.
“We have consistently said that there was a legal and democratic imperative to have a referendum. This announcement has shown that once again, we were proven correct.
“Now we need clarity from the government on whether they will accept the outcome of a referendum. It is worrying that there have been reports already that Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has refused to discuss whether the Irish electorate would have to face a second referendum if the Fiscal Compact Treaty referendum is rejected. The government have a responsibility to ensure the debate on the treaty is informed honestly and not lead by bullying tactics. They also have a further responsibility to ensure whatever the outcome is, that it is upheld.
“This austerity treaty will not help the people of Ireland and will not fix our broken economy. It will, like its predecessor the Lisbon Treaty, have no positive effect on job creation.”
