Adams applauds resolve of Vita Cortex workers

2 May, 2012 - by Gerry Adams

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has welcomed the resolution of the five month long sit-in by workers at Vita Cortex in Cork. The Sinn Féin leader said:

“I want to applaud and extend congratulations and solidarity to the Vita Cortex workers in Cork. Over five months they displayed enormous courage and tenacity in defence of their rights and entitlements.

"I visited the Vita Cortex at the beginning of March and met many of the workers. I was impressed by their resolve to continue with the sit-in until they had achieved a satisfactory outcome. However the workers in Vita Cortex are not alone in being victimised.

" There are employers who don’t want to waste the recession and who see it as an opportunity to mistreat their workers. The experience of the Vita Cortex workers, as well as those in Vodafone and Lagan Brick and Irish Cement and other places is evidence of the failure of government to protect workers. There is a responsibility on the government, especially one with a Labour component, to introduce strong legislative rights and protections for workers.”
