Carers report commended by Sinn Féin MLA Sue Ramsey
West Belfast MLA Sue Ramsey today launched the Care at Home report launched at Stormont in which she commended the Patient and Client Council.
The Sinn Féin MLA, who is Chair of the Assembly’s Health Committee said:
“Carers sometimes do not get the recognition for the big difference they make to the lives of older people.
“This report has many positive words about carers but unfortunately social workers are under extreme pressure with very little time actually spent face to face with their clients.
“We need to adopt better approaches that minimise administrative and paper work and allow the carers to spend more time with their clients.
“The Health Committee acknowledge that the current social care system in by no means perfect. That is why we welcomed the recently published ‘Transforming Your Care’ review which focussed on moving more care away from hospitals and GP surgeries towards people’s homes.
“We are keen to see these themes implanted and we believe that prevention and early intervention are vital to keep people out of hospitals.
“I commend the Patient and Client Council for producing this report as ultimately the feedback it voices will help create a better health service for us all.”
