Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey expresses party's concerns on Housing Executive report
Sinn Féin MLA and spokesperson on Social Development Alex Maskey has stated that on the back of several forthcoming reports into maintenance contracts at the Housing Executive it is imperative that the two pillars of quality housing for tenants and sound public expenditure must be the focus.
Speaking today Mr Maskey said:
“Sinn Féin are very concerned at the report into maintenance contracts by the Housing Executive referred to today by the Minister for Social Development.
“Our primary concern is the standard of work carried out in the homes of tenants and that quality housing and any further maintenance be carried out to the highest standards is paramount to ensure that our social housing stock delivers for our tenants.
“As far as I am concerned this issue and the proper expenditure of public monies must be the focus.
“We look forward to the Housing Executives response to the concerns highlighted today and given that we are aware that there are more reports forthcoming, which will need further response, Sinn Féin will be monitoring this situation.
“In terms of oversight of these and other issues any report should trace the effectiveness and robustness of scrutiny mechanisms from the Contractors, to the Housing Executive, right through to the Department of Social Development itself.
“Further to this there is also an issue fairly widespread perception within the wider community that elements of the DUP have an agenda against the Housing Executive based on sectarian claims. I must take this opportunity to stress that any review from the Minister must be conducted with the utmost of impartiality and professionalism.”
