GM survey proves EU regulations inadequate
Dublin Sinn Féin candidate Mary Lou McDonald has claimed that the findings of a survey by the Food Safety Authority proves that the current EU regulations governing the labelling of GM foods are inadequate.
Ms. McDonald was referring to an FSAI survey that showed some food companies were falsely claiming that their products were GM free.
Ms. McDonald said: "The findings of this survey were given to the Sinn Féin spokesperson on Agriculture Martin Ferris TD in response to a Dáil question. A further enquiry revealed that no action was taken against those companies found to be in breach of the regulations.
"What this proves is that the current EU regulatory regime is inadequate. The only reliable way in which to protect Irish consumers from GM is for this country to be declared a GM free zone. Sinn Féin will continue to campaign for this at local, national and EU level as outlined in our comprehensive policy document For a GM Free Ireland." ENDS
