Government gearing up for another slash and burn budget – Cullinane
Sinn Féin Senator David Cullinane has said that it is clear that the government is gearing up for “another slash and burn budget which will target the most vulnerable.”
Senator Cullinane said:
“This government came to power on a platform of change. Clearly very little has changed. The latest update to the Troika memorandum of understanding includes a commitment from the government to make €2.25 billion in cuts in the next budget.
“Clearly Fine Gael and Labour have learned nothing from previous budgets which have targeted the least well off and have resulted in nothing but suffering and hardship for those people.
“There are alternatives. The government knows this and Sinn Féin has laid out year after year fair and costed alternatives which would work given the chance. The reality is this is about political will. It is time the government started making the right choices on behalf of the people. Slashing social welfare, cutting the budgets of hospitals and schools and making no visible effort to create jobs are not the right choices.”
