DUP motion on Orange Order clearly designed to be divisive – Sinn Féin

29 August, 2012

Sinn Féin Councillor for Lisburn Arder Carson has stated that Sinn Féin will continue to oppose the Orange Order being granted the freedom of Lisburn City following a DUP motion at last night’s full council meeting.

Speaking today Cllr Carson said:

“This motion was clearly designed by the DUP to be divisive. How can a motion calling for an anti-Catholic organisation, which to date has played no positive role in the peace process, to be granted the freedom of Lisburn serve all sections of this community?

“We only have to look at illegal actions this weekend and on the 12th of July outside St Patrick's Chapel, along with the provocative and divisive marches in Ardoyne and Rasharkin this summer, to see the sectarianism and lack of leadership that accompanies contentious Loyal Order marches.

“The Orange Order have to step up to the mark. They have it within their gift to move our society forward by dealing with the handful of contentious marches and engaging with residents of those communities affected. While they continue to hold communities to ransom each summer there will be little room for council motions such as this.”
