O’Dowd presented with ‘Languages for the Future’ recommendations

19 September, 2012 - by John O'Dowd

Education Minister, John O’Dowd has met with Professors Gillespie, Johnston and Ailbhe Ó Corráin and been presented with their recommendations on the way forward for the promotion of modern languages.

Following the meeting, Minister O’Dowd said: “I value the contribution that languages learning can bring to children. I recognise the importance of language learning both socially and economically. Learning a second language can help our young people become creative and articulate individuals, able to play their full part in our increasing diverse society and achieve their full potential. To compete as a global economy we need a workforce that can communicate effectively with people from all backgrounds, including those from the international community."

The Minister will now look carefully, within the resources available to him, at how best to move forward on the recommendations that are focused on the teaching and learning of modern languages in schools, taking account of other considerations and reforms already underway in the education system. The Minister thanked the authors of the document for the work and effort that they have put into producing it.
