Animal cruelty register needed
Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has called on Justice Minister David Ford to introduce an animal cruelty register to help protect animals from undue suffering.
Mr. McMullan said,
“In recent years we have seen and heard of some horrific incidents involving animals from scores of horses starving to death, the recent setting alight of a dog to the constant menace of badger baiting.
“Although in some cases the courts have imposed bans upon individuals convicted of animal cruelty the vast majority of people are not registered as having inflicted pain upon animals.
“I am calling upon the Minister of Justice to introduce a animal cruelty register so that we can monitor those who are convicted of animal cruelty so that they do not get the opportunity to own or work in an industry related to animals.”
