Puppies will be great aid to children with autism

20 November, 2012 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin Junior Minister Jennifer McCann has welcomed the charity group Assistance Dogs NI to Parliament Buildings.  5 young puppies that are being specially trained before being given to children who have Autism accompanied the group.

 Ms. McCann said,

"I would like to congratulate Assistance Dogs NI for the great work they do in training dogs for people with disabilities in order that they can lead a more independent life.

“These young puppies are to be given to children who have autism so as to help break down the social isolation those children can face.

“Parents with Autistic children know only too well the difficulties those children face and the sense of social exclusion they can experience so it is important we develop ways of allowing the children to become more socially mobile.

“This organisation through these young puppies provides a valuable lifeline to those children as they will hopefully become supportive assistants for them."
