McDonald welcomes PAC report on public sector allowances

22 November, 2012 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Committee on Public Accounts member and Sinn Féin’s Spokesperson on Public Expenditure and Reform Mary Lou McDonald TD has this afternoon welcomed the PAC Report on Public Sector Allowances.

Deputy McDonald said:
“From the outset Sinn Féin warned against a rush to judgment on the allowances paid to public sector workers and today’s report vindicates this position.

“The bulk of the allowances are in fact core pay and in many instances make up a significant portion of low paid workers weekly salary. Interestingly over the decades some sections of low and middle income workers have had to rely on the anomaly of allowances for modest pay increases whilst those at the top during the same period have seen their pay mushroom through pay agreements.

“Whilst I support the recommendations of the report Sinn Féin’s Alternative Budget for 2013 launched this week sets out additional measures we would take in reducing the annual Oireachtas allowances, pay and pensions bill.

“Sinn Féin’s Making the Right Choices Alternative Budget includes measures that would reduce office holders, TDs and Senators pay; introduce a levy on excessive public sector pensions; withdraw unwarranted allowances such as those for mobile phones and committee chair positions.

“Politics is about making the right choices and politicians must lead from the front.”
