Joanne Dobson has lost plot over horsemeat

13 March, 2013 - by Chris Hazzard

Agriculture Committee member Chris Hazzard MLA commented following the latest press release from UUP MLA Joanne Dobson, “In recent weeks Joanne Dobson has been making increasingly erratic and nonsensical comments that have no basis in reality. In her latest statement she has accused Agriculture Minister Michelle O ‘Neill of not defending the local industry during the horsemeat crisis.”

Chris Hazzard continued, “I find those comments bizarre as Minister O’Neill has been the only Executive Minister that has been to the forefront of publicly defending the local meat farming industry and our own locally produced meat. She has been regularly in the media making it clear that our home grown local produce is not involved in the issue and that the processing sector need to instigate the same traceability mechanisms that our farming industry already operate.

The South Down MLA added, “Minister O’Neill has also been extremely vocal in saying that the supermarkets need to put in place ongoing systems of testing to ensure that customers can have confidence that products they are purchasing are above reproach. Therefore it is vital that all efforts are put get to the bottom of this issue and ensure any criminality is firmly dealt with, Joanne Dobson would be better focusing on the pushing for those issues rather than making political coloured inaccurate statements that do nothing to defend our local industry and have no basis in fact.”
