Another casualty of recession: Avon Ireland closes

9 April, 2013

Sinn Féin TD and enterprise jobs and innovation spokesperson, Peadar Tóibín has met with contractors previously operating with Avon Ireland after they heard news of the company’s closure. According to An Teachta Tóibín this closures is yet another symptom of a deeply sick domestic economy.
“Hundreds of employees will lose their jobs and thousands of others who operate as part time representatives will also lose pivotal household income.
“Many of these former representatives are women supplementing household income with badly needed revenue. Given that the recession already has pushed so many families to the edge of poverty, this announcement will have a devastating effect on some households.
“The FG/Labour government is nearly half way through its term and its failure to tackle the real economy continues to see domestic demand on the floor. The societal damage being done will have long and far reaching consequences.
