Supreme Court Judgement in Neary case regrettable - Inquiry should be extended

20 July, 2004

Commenting on today's Supreme Court judgement in relation to medical malpratice by Michael Neary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghin Ó Caoláin TD said:

"The outcome of today's case is regrettable for Rosemary Cunningham and for all the female victims of the gross malpractice that took place in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital over many years. It must be remembered that these women have had recourse to the courts primarily because of the years of delay in investigating this matter on the part of the Medical Council before it eventually struck off Michael Neary. The Minister for Health and Children Micheál Martin should, in the light of this judgement, widen the scope of the inquiry by Judge Maureen Harding Clark and ensure the compellability of witnesses."
