Minister should increase funding for amateur boxing - McLellan

26 April, 2013

Commenting on the allocation of funding for amateur boxing, Sinn Féin spokesperson on sport, Sandra McLellan TD said:
“The allocation of one million euro in funding to the Irish Amateur Boxing Association for distribution to clubs across the country is a good use of taxpayers’ money, however there is already a backlog of applicants from the 2012 funding stream.
“Boxing is a very successful sport in terms of the Olympics and it is particularly popular in working class communities and with members of the Travelling Community.
“It is important that clubs in these communities get their share of funding and that any process involving the distribution of public money is fair and transparent.
“Irish boxers, male and female have brought great honour to Ireland and they are excellent ambassadors for Irish sport.
“It is important that the Minister recognises this contribution and that his department supports the development and evolution of amateur boxing in Ireland.
“Therefore I would urge him to increase funding to the Irish Amateur Boxing Association with the specific aim of clearing the 2012 backlog.
