National Hungerstrike Commemoration to be held in Monaghan
Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has said that that National Hungerstrike Commemoration will be held this year in Monaghan Town.
Speaking on the 32nd anniversary of the death of Bobby Sands former Hungerstriker Mr. McCartney said,
“Today marks the 32nd anniversary of the death of my friend and comrade Bobby Sands, the first of the ten Long Kesh Hungerstrikers to die.
“Republicans across Ireland and indeed across the globe will today remember with pride and reflect on the death of Bobby Sands and I would like to announce that the National Hungerstrike commemoration will take place in Monaghan Town on the 4th August 2013.
“This is the first time that the commemoration will be held South of the border and it is fitting that it is held in constituency of Monaghan which elected Kieran Doherty as Teachta Dála (TD) in June 1981.
“I am sure that there will be another massive turnout to honour not only the ten H-Block Hungerstrikers but also those other Irish Republicans who have died on Hungerstrike in the quest for Irish Freedom.”
