McDonald welcomes progress on Construction Contracts Bill

15 May, 2013 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Public Expenditure and Reform Mary Lou McDonald TD has welcomed progress made today on the Construction Contracts Bill.

The Dublin Central TD said:

“It is 1,098 days since the Construction Contracts Bill was first introduced to the Seanad and today it finally reached Committee stage in the Dáil. Senator Fergal Quinn introduced the Bill in 2010 and is to be commended on a job well done on introducing legislative protections for sub-contractors.

“Discussion on the legislation was constructive and positive and the government’s amendments reflected the recommendations of the Regulatory Impact Analysis of the Construction Contracts Bill.

“Concern remains following the ruling out of order of amendments put by myself and others seeking to protect sub-contractors and suppliers of specifically designed and manufactured items, or bespoke materials.

“It is critically important that we protect against any future attempt by rogue employers to use loop holes in the legislation to get out of their commitments and responsibilities to subcontractors.

“I look forward to further engagement with the Minister of State Brian Hayes and his officials on the legislation to ensure we deliver robust protections for sub-contractors.”
