Minister needs to come clean about bogs – McLellan

30 May, 2013

Speaking in the Dail today on the issue of turf cutting and bogs, Sinn Fein spokesperson on Arts, Heritage and Tourism, Sandra McLellan TD said:

“One wonders if the minister is aware that there are lots of difficulties with the fifty-three bogs in the special areas of conservation. And that there is also concern with bogs in the Natural Habitat Areas.

“We need to know how many bogs are designated under Irish law and how flexible that law is. We also need to know in how many Natural Habitat Areas turf cutting is taking place.

“Has the Minister held any meeting with the turf cutters? And what meetings if any, have been held between the cutters and the National Parks and Wildlife Service?

“Sinn Fein and the turf cutters would like to know if there is any possibility of lifting the designation on some or part of the bogs in the Natural Habitat Areas.

“The Minister needs to come clean about the bogs and answer these questions as a matter of urgency.”
