Homes in Short Strand attacked

16 July, 2013

East Belfast Sinn Féin Councillor Niall O’Donnghaile has said that attacks on homes in the Short Strand tonight cannot be divorced from remarks made on the media this evening by the Rev Mervyn Gibson demonising the community who live there.

Cllr. O’Donnghaile said:

“This evening within an hour of the evening news programmes  a unionist mob came out of Pitt Park and carried out an attack on homes in the Short Strand. Throughout the day Rev Mervyn Gibson has been on the media demonising residents of this community and wrongly blaming them for organising at attack on the Twelfth parade. His irresponsible comments cannot be divorced from the attack on this community tonight.

“As a prominent member of the unionist community in East Belfast Mervyn Gibson’s remarks hold weight. He should be using this influence to end attacks on the Short Strand not to inflame tensions further in an already difficult situation.”
