INM Group should answer questions on Gemma O'Doherty: MacLochlainn

22 September, 2013 - by Pádraig Mac Lochlainn

Sinn Féin justice spokesperson, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has called on the management at the INM Group to answer questions about the removal of the journalist, Gemma O' Doherty from her position at the Independent group of newspapers.

Deputy Mac Lochlainn said:

"The allegation that Gemma O' Doherty was sacked because she called to the home of the Garda Commissioner, Martin Callinan, asking questions about allegations that he had penalty points wiped out and for her pursuit of other stories, has been in the public domain for weeks now.

“It is further alleged that senior journalists at the Independent Group have also had penalty points wiped out.

“These allegations are very serious and it is not acceptable for the INM Group management to not answer the questions that arise. The longer they maintain their silence, the more the potential damage to Irish journalism.

“Indeed international media is now shining a light on this story since The Guardian newspaper covered it last week.

He concluded:

“The key role of journalism in a democracy is to hold power to account. Any suggestion that a journalist was sacked for doing just that, and that other journalists are protecting power from full accountability are matters of vital public interest. It's time for answers.”
