Call for all party support to reform direct provision

23 October, 2013

Sinn Féin Senator, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, has called for those of all parties and none in the Seanad to support a motion today which looks at reform of the direct provision system.

The motion draws attention to the system of accommodating asylum seekers which has been criticised by non-governmental & international human rights organisations, academics, politicians and individuals.

Asylum seekers have described their stay in direct provision as being worse than a prison sentence as you don’t know how long it will last.

Former Ombudsman, Emily O’Reilly, raised serious concerns about the lack of a complaints procedures and oversight mechanisms. Others have raised concerns regarding Child Protection issues.

Senator Ó Clochartaigh is calling on the Minister to reform the system to one which is more humane, more efficient and in line with best practice at an International level as quickly as possible.
