Prison success should benefit local community – Jennifer McCann

29 October, 2013 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann said successful tourism projects like the Crumlin Road Prison must see benefit those in surrounding areas.

The West Belfast MLA was speaking after attending an event to mark the 100,000th visitor at the prison.

Jennifer McCann said:

“The area around the Crumlin Road Prison has suffered greatly during the conflict and still deals with its legacy, on a daily basis.

“Almost one fifth of all the people who died were killed in this immediate area and many thousands more were injured.

“This prison has seen tens of thousands of political prisoners pass through its front gates.

“Today we welcomed the 100,000th visitor with people attracted to the prison nowadays because of its historical and tourist significance. That success must filter to the people of the surrounding areas, areas that are sorely in need of any economic dividend.

“North Belfast is an area of high social and economic deprivation and it needs to have a targeted approach to tackle the disadvantage and meet the needs of residents.

“Sectarianism and deprivation need to be challenged and dealt with if we are to move society forward.”
