Cutting the dole for younger people was Government’s own decision
Speaking after meeting the Troika, Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Social Protection Deputy Aengus Ó Snodaigh said cutting young the dole for younger people was the government's own idea and they should abandon it.
Deputy Ó Snodaigh said:
"It was crystal clear from my meeting with the Troika yesterday afternoon that targeting young jobseekers for cuts was the government's own idea. The Troika did not even suggest it, let alone insist upon it.
“Yesterday the government celebrated a reduction in the live register but a deeper examination of the latest CSO figures reveals a different picture. While the number of young people on the register continues to fall this is largely a consequence of mass emigration not employment. The cuts to young jobseekers allowance which the government, acting on its own initiative, have chosen to make will exacerbate this.
“Up to 20,000 young people will be affected by cuts to their social welfare next year and the government are introducing just 3,250 additional places in education or training.
“You cannot incentivise young people into jobs or training if they don't exist. The government have an opportunity to abandon these cuts next week when the Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2013 goes before the Seanad. I am calling on them once again to do so.”
