Investment in youth services welcomed

14 November, 2013 - by Chris Hazzard

Sinn Féin MLA and Education Spokesperson Chris Hazzard has welcomed Education Minister John O’Dowd’s announcement that 53 youth projects are to benefit from a major £12 million investment to refurbish or rebuild their facilities.

 Mr. Hazzard said,

“Youth clubs provide a valuable resource in the education of young people by instilling life skills but it is important that clubs are fit for purpose.

“It is important that young people have access to these clubs where they can develop social skills and responsibilities as well as engaging in education and recreational courses.

“Today’s announcement by the Minister that £12m will be shared across 53 youth organisations in improving their facilities is welcome news indeed. It will be used for a variety of projects across the North, including the refurbishment and upgrade of buildings through to the demolition and construction of brand new facilities.

“This money will also enable many projects to secure match funding and when that is taken into account the total value of the projects is almost £17m.

“Not only is this welcome for those youth clubs successful in gaining funding but will also provide an injection to the local construction industry as the major works get under way.”
