Widespread salary breaches cause justifiable anger – Ó Caoláin

Commenting on the report of the HSE Director General Tony O’Brien to the Public Accounts Committee regarding remuneration for top executives in agencies funded by the HSE, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said:

“The report from the HSE Director General confirms that there is widespread non-compliance with pay policy among agencies funded by the HSE.

“People have been angered at the revelations of top-ups for executives who are already on inflated salaries.

“But the reality is that the government itself has fostered this culture of privilege. As well as breaching its own guidelines for pay of special advisors, the government, for example, actually signed off on a salary deal of nearly €200,000 per annum for a top HSE executive appointed to HSE West, based on the salary top-up he received while he was CEO of St. Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin.

“Ministers Reilly and Howlin guaranteed this salary of €195,000 based on this individual’s salary plus top-up.

“There are now 129 senior HSE executives on salaries of over €100,000 per annum – that is up from the start of 2012 when I was given the figure of 110 in reply to a Dáil Question.

“Sinn Féin has consistently called for a rebalancing of pay in the health service in favour of lower paid staff and reducing the excess salaries at the top, and it should be undertaken without further delay, as part of real reform of our struggling health system.” ENDS
