Jobbridge for vacancy in IDA - Why not create a job, that's what they're set up to do - Ó Snodaigh
This exploitation of the unemployed and the job displacement associated with it has to end. Create proper jobs with proper pay and conditions should be the aim of this government, not yellow pack internships.
The IDA has been accused of abusing the despair of job seeking graduates with its advertisement on JobBridge for the position of Executive Assistant by Sinn Féin's Social Protection spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh.
Deputy Ó Snodaigh said:
"The exploitation of unemployed workers and graduates took another twist today with the State's job creation agency the IDA using JobBridge to fill a vacancy for an executive assistant in their International Financial Services Division. Unfortunately the public services embargo prevents the IDA hiring new staff, so they are trying to get around it on the backs of desperate unemployed graduates.
"They are saying we can't create a job for you, but we will use your free labour to create jobs for others.
"Instead of doing their job, creating employment, they are looking to benefit from 9 months free labour from a third level graduate with previous experience.
"The message that will send out internationally is that the state is willing to abuse the despair of graduates looking for sustainable jobs with an internship worth a paltry €50 extra a week, with no possibility of a full-time job at the end of it.
"This exploitation of the unemployed and the job displacement associated with it has to end. Create proper jobs with proper pay and conditions should be the aim of this government, not yellow pack internships. Lift the public service embargo and fill the vacancies that require to be filled."
