Adams responds to Tánaiste remarks

19 January, 2014 - by Gerry Adams TD

Responding to  comments today by Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore, Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams TD said:

"I welcome today's comments by Mr Gilmore in relation to the implementation of the Haass proposals.

"I have consistently pressed the Taoiseach and Tánaiste to take a hands-on role in this matter. I have also asked the Taoiseach for a Dáil debate on these issues.

"The Irish Government must know that the unionist parties are unlikely to do the right thing if the British Government is in breach of its obligations and commitments.

"The responsibility of the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste is to get David Cameron to face up to their obligations.

"The fact is that there is still no Acht na Gaeilge in the north. There is no Bill of Rights. There has not been the necessary inquiry into the murder of Pat Finucane. And the British Government still refuses to release important files on the Dublin/Monaghan bombings.

"Finally, the Irish Government needs to be unambiguous in its support for the full implementation of the Haass proposals."

Commenting on the scandal at the CRC, the Sinn Fein Leader said:

"Former Chief Executive Paul Kiely must hand back every cent of a retirement package taken from those, including children, in need of vital services.

"I also believe that the state should now take over the running of the CRC."  ENDS
