Opportunities still available for all Irish language groups – Sinn Féin MLA

22 January, 2014 - by Rosie McCorley

Sinn Féin MLA Rosie McCorley said there is still a role for Irish language groups who were unsuccessful in bids to become lead organisations in the new funding arrangements announced by Foras na Gaeilge.

The Sinn Féin MLA and party spokesperson on the Irish language said:

“While the lead groups are based in Dublin they all have an all-island complexion. Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has said she will ensure that at the very least, one quarter of that work will be in the North and that staff will be based in the North representing language development and sitting on the partnership fora.

“As part of the new arrangements there will be an all-Ireland development forum representative of local Irish language interest groups.

This forum will be funded by Foras at community level and co-ordinating all activities to ensure the best interests of the Irish language are served.

“These new core funding arrangements have been in the making for a while now and a process will be in place to assist groups who want to avail themselves of additional or other opportunities from Foras na Gaeilge or any other Departments.

“These new all-Ireland arrangements will provide the longer-term security needed to meet the future needs of the Irish language sector.

“Sinn Féin is totally committed to the future of Gaeilge and ensuring that the Irish language is funded, maintained and sustained.  Our track record speaks for itself on this.”
