Taoiseach must address gravity of whistleblower claims in the Dáil

25 February, 2014 - by Gerry Adams

Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams TD has called on the Government to set aside Dáil time today to discuss the latest revelations of malpractice within An Garda Síochána and allegations that the Minister for Justice failed to act on important information.
The call follows on Friday’s request by the Sinn Fein Leader for the Taoiseach to address the Dáil on the issues raised.

Gerry Adams said:

"I wrote to An Taoiseach last Friday asking him to come into the Dáil today to make a statement on the grave allegations contained in the dossier from the whistleblower Garda Maurice McCabe.

“The cases allegedly include such serious issues as murder, abduction and assault.

"There is also the allegation that the Minister for Justice was aware about these cases for two years but failed to take action.
“Given the gravity of these claims and the urgent need for public confidence in the policing and justice system in this state, it is imperative that Dail discusses these matters.

“So far the Taoiseach has not responded to my request to make a statement to the Dail. Therefore, Sinn Féin has this morning written to the Ceann Comhairle requesting that he set aside time under Standing Order 33 so that the Dáil can discuss these very serious issues.“
