Ethical banking will help restore Ulster Bank reputation

Speaking after RBS and Ulster Bank announced their annual results today Sinn Féin Economy spokesperson Daithí  McKay said : 

 "What we all want to see is Ulster Bank restoring its reputation and treating its customers and its business clients fairly. However what we do not want to see is a service provided to Ulster Bank customers in the north based on the needs of RBS customers in Britain. A degree of autonomy and flexibility will be required to ensure that the needs of the Ulster Bank come first.

 "The Bank needs to engage and work with employee representatives over the time ahead as there are concerns about the impact the review will have on the number of branches and possible staff cutbacks.

 "No more viable businesses should be sacrificed through the Bank's Global Restructuring Group or any similar mechanism in order to help RBS balance its books. If Ulster Bank is to restore its status and reputation it can only do so by acting in a more ethical way. That is the only way to restore the trust and confidence that has been lost as a result of past behaviour and findings in publications such as the Tomlinson Report.

 "Now that the company wide review has been completed I have asked the Ulster Bank to honour its commitment to come before the Finance Committee at the Assembly and to make clear what the changes proposed will mean for staff as well as customers." ENDS
