20 March, 2014 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann said everything must be done to ensure people with mental health problems can lead independent lives.

Speaking at an event orgainsed by MENCAP and NIAMH this morning the West Belfast MLA said:

“It is important that the rights of people with mental health difficulties or with a learning disability are protected to ensure their life-chances are not limited or constrained.

“Government departments, agencies and service providers all have a responsibility to work alongside people who have mental health problems, their families and carers to support them in decisions that effect all aspects of their lives.

“Today one in every five people, are affected by some form of disability and one in every four families at some stage in their lifetime will be affected.

“Everyone in society has a responsibility to raise awareness of disability issues and place them firmly in the context of disability rights.

“Sinn Féin will continue to promote and protect the rights of people with mental health difficulties and learning disabilities, to ensure they can lead independent lives.”
