Lynn Boylan calls for Fine Gael & Labour councillors to show support for directly elected Mayor for Dublin

24 March, 2014 - by Senator Lynn Boylan

Sinn Féin Dublin EU candidate Lynn Boylan has this evening called on all Fine Gael and Labour Councillors to support real local government reform and support tonight’s Dublin City Council vote on the holding of a referendum for a directly elected Mayor for the capital city.

The Dublin candidate said:

“Just last week Sinn Féin Councillors from across Dublin’s four local authorities pledged their support for a directly elected Mayor for Dublin and set out the key responsibilities and priorities of the new office.

“Government’s commitment to local government reform will be truly tested tonight, and it would be a truly ludicrous situation if any Fine Gael or Labour Councillor voted against giving the people of the city the opportunity to decide themselves if they want a directly elected Mayor of Dublin.

“It is Sinn Fein’s strong view a directly elected mayor for Dublin is an important part of much needed reform of local government in across the capital. Giving Dubliners a real choice about how the city is run is a positive and progressive reform and it is a proposition that Sinn Féin supports.”
