Getting young people back to work is not a priority for this Government – Lynn Boylan
Speaking at tonight’s UCD Law Society debate on Youth Unemployment in Ireland Sinn Féin’s Dublin EU candidate Lynn Boylan argued that tackling youth unemployment needs substantial investment and a comprehensive strategy, and that the Government has failed on both fronts.
The Young Dublin candidate said:
“When you get past the spin and look at the detail of the Youth Guarantee Implementation Plan it becomes clear that the Government does not have a comprehensive strategy to deliver a positive and proactive policy solution to tackling youth unemployment.
“Getting young people back to work is not a priority for this Government. Peddling spin fools no-one and we know from the emigration figures that young people are voting with their feet.
“Government is copper fastening exploitative schemes like JobBridge and is failing to provide for our most vulnerable young people including young Mums and carers. Labour and Fine Gael’s hypocrisy in providing for a very limited Youth Guarantee scheme with one hand, whilst slashing services and benefits for young people with the other is galling.
“Sinn Féin’s budget submission for 2014 provided for an ambitious investment in a Youth Guarantee by ring-fencing significant income raised from a Wealth Tax. Tackling youth unemployment needs substantial investment and a comprehensive strategy. Government has failed on both fronts.”
