Hargey backs Mayor’s ‘Compassionate City Charter’ initiative

2 June, 2014

Sinn Féin Belfast City councillor Deirdre Hargey has welcomed the initiative by Belfast Mayor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir in launching a ‘Compassionate City Charter’ on his last day in office.

Deirdre Hargey said it would send out a very positive message if all the group leaders in City Hall added their signatures to this charter.

Councillor Hargey said:

“I commend the mayor on this initiative and the chaplains representing the diverse religious and ethnic make-up of Belfast who signed the ‘Compassionate City Charter’.

“Máirtín Ó Muilleoir conducted himself in an exemplary manner over the past 12 months representing all the people of this city as their Mayor. He will be a hard act to follow.

“I believe it would be a very tangible expression of the rejection of intolerance, racism and sectarianism if all of the group leaders in City Hall sign this charter.

“This would clear show solidarity with our ethnic and minority communities wherever they reside.

“It’s vital political leaders right across the community are seen to be standing shoulder to shoulder against those involved in hate crime whether it be sectarian or racist in character.

“The message must go out in the clearest of terms that there is no place for racial or sectarian intolerance in this society.”
