Martin Ferris TD to call Kerry TDs to act on Altobridge layoffs

4 June, 2014 - by Martin Ferris TD

Speaking after the news broke that 45 jobs are to go at Kerry technology company Altobridge, Sinn Féin TD, Martin Ferris, said this is a blow to workers, their families and the local economy in North Kerry.

Deputy Ferris said:

"This is a company which received plenty of state aid since it started up 12 years ago. It is in receivership now and I call on Minister Bruton, Enterprise Ireland and the IDA to get moving on finding buyers for the company who will keep it going.

“Considering comments on radio today from Deputy Arthur Spring that he had been aware of the company’s difficulties for a number of weeks, and that the chairman of the company is former Labour Party leader, Dick Spring, it is a pity that he didn’t warn local elected representatives of the impending danger of layoffs. I feel we could have tried to help if the Kerry TDs had got together at an earlier stage.

“Deputy Ferris will be contacting all the relevant bodies and the Kerry TDs as soon as possible to discuss possible measures.

“These layoffs and those being threatened in Bausch & Lomb in Waterford give the lie to government spin about recovery.

"The priority must be to keep companies open, keep workers working and to create jobs. Forty-five jobs gone is a terrible blow to this local economy and everything possible should be done to save them."
