Surrender of air passengers personal data is breach of fundamental rights

29 September, 2004

Sinn Féin MEP for the six counties Bairbre de Brún has said that the introduction of fingerprinting and photographing of holidaymakers to the US is a fundamental breach of human rights. The "US-Visit Programme" will come into effect tomorrow when Irish holidaymakers must be fingerprinted and photographed before being allowed to travel to the United States. The scheme applies to citizens aged between 14-79.

Speaking today, Ms de Brún said:

"The US Visit Programme represents a gross breach of the fundamental rights of air travellers to the USA.

"Sinn Féin opposes present attempts to create an EU security and surveillance state in the name of the so-called "War on Terrorism" because we do not believe that this approach which involves draconian measures will make people or communities in Ireland or the EU any safer.

"Sinn Féin will continue to defend the freedoms and civil liberties of Irish citizens and oppose the unrelenting drive towards the evolution of a big brother world order." ENDS
